Conjunctivitis (Pink Eye)

Conjunctivitis, commonly referred to as pink eye, is an infection or inflammation of the conjunctiva. In our eyes the conjunctiva is a layer of tissue that protects the surface of the eyeball and the eyelids. Infections of the conjunctiva are caused by allergens, viruses, bacteria, dust, irritants like chemicals, fumes, and smoke. If you suspect you or a family member has pink eye, do not touch the area and wash your hands frequently as this infection is highly contagious. Signs and symptoms of conjunctivitis include profuse tearing, yellow or green discharge, redness, and itching. Glaucoma

Glaucoma can cause vision problems and is called the silent thief of sight. This treatable eye condition is a progressive elevation in the intraocular pressure in the eyes. If not treated, the rising pressure will damage the optic nerve and affect vision. Your peripheral vision will decrease and eventually cause blindness. Treatment involves medications and surgery. The objective is to stop more damage and reduce the pressure in the eyes. Some medications that lower the eye pressure include beta-blocker eye drops or in people that have heart or lung conditions, alpha 2 agonist and prostaglandin drops.
