PINK EYE, BELAIR
Conjunctivitis, also known as pink eye, is an infection of the conjunctiva — a transparent skin membrane that provides a protective lining to the eyelids as well as covering the eyeball’s white part. When inflammation occurs, the tiny blood vessels found in the conjunctiva become more visible. This, therefore, causes the patient’s eye to appear pink or reddish.
Pink eye can occur because of an allergic reaction, a viral or bacterial infection, or — in babies, a tear duct that is incompletely opened. The virus that causes the condition often is adenovirus. However, there are a few other viruses that can bring about the condition like a varicella-zoster virus, herpes simplex virus, and even coronavirus disease. Conjunctivitis caused by both bacterial and viral infections can occur simultaneously with symptoms of flu and respiratory infections. Dusty or shared contact lenses can also cause bacterial infection leading to the condition. This last cause has been the main cause for most of the pink eye patients who have paid us a visit at our BelAir, Arizona center.
The bacterial and viral kinds of infections are both very communicable. They can easily be spread via direct or indirect contact with the fluid from an infected person’s eye. This condition can affect one or both eyes.
The most common symptoms of pink eye include eye redness, eye itchiness, persistent irritating feeling in one or both eyes, tearing, and a discharge from the infected eye. This discharge usually forms a crust at night that may make it difficult for you to open your eyes in the morning.
Though irritating, this condition seldom affects one’s vision. With proper treatment from our clinic in the BelAir area, the discomfort from the condition can be taken away. Since it is a highly contagious disease, it is best to treat it as soon as possible.
